Rent is the easy number. It’s everything underneath it that decides whether independence actually pays you more.

What a commission chair really pays

On a 45% commission split, a stylist doing $1,600 a week in services takes home about $720 before taxes. Product, color, laundry, software, and marketing are covered — that’s the trade. You give up roughly half the ticket in exchange for someone else carrying the overhead and the risk.

That’s a fair deal for a stylist who’s still building. It stops being a fair deal the moment your column is full, your prices are strong, and your clients are booking you by name.
