Last Thursday, I (Quinn) stood in front of a room full of Community Action House staff and volunteers, and told them something I’ve believed for twenty-five years:
Self-care is not a luxury. It’s infrastructure.
It’s the thing that determines whether you show up to your family, your work, and your life with strength—or whether you show up depleted and call it dedication.
That belief isn’t a tagline. It’s the reason two very different salons exist under one vision—and it’s time to connect the dots.
THE WHY
I know what it feels like to need help and not know how to ask for it. I know what it’s like to watch someone you love carry more than one person should carry alone, and to realize, years later, that the moments that mattered most weren’t the big ones. They were the small ones. When someone noticed. When someone showed up. When someone treated you like you mattered.
That feeling is the one I’ve been chasing my entire career.
When someone sits in my chair, I don’t just see hair. I see the woman underneath it—the one who puts everyone else first and herself dead last. And when she walks out and stands a little taller? That’s not vanity. That’s restoration.
THE ENGINE — QUINN VISE HAIR DESIGN & CO.
In 2014, I opened Quinn Vise Hair Design & Co. in Holland’s historic Baker Building. Today we have over thirty team members operating on what I call a “highly educated, community obsessed artists” philosophy, and that phrase isn’t marketing language. It’s a conviction.
QVD is the engine. A 10-level career path system where stylists don’t just learn technique, they learn how to build a career that supports a household, a family, a life. Where financial empowerment and personal growth aren’t separate conversations.
QVD is proof that a commission salon can be built on generosity and still thrive. But it alone wasn’t the full picture. Something was missing: a space for a different kind of work.
THE EXTENSION — MANE JANES
Mane Janes lives at 761 East 8th Street, Holland, Michigan. A flexible, modern space designed for independent stylists—shift-based rentals, a stocked color bar, coaching if you want it, no long-term contracts. Freedom and optional support for artists forging their own path.
It’s also a private Masters Academy where I personally train newly licensed stylists in the intricate details no one teaches you in school—reading body language, choosing your words, understanding what makes a luxury service non-negotiable rather than a yearly treat.
But in the art of luxury is the beauty of grace and kindness that doesn’t run out.
And Mane Janes is home to something I’m deeply, personally proud of.
THE PARTNERSHIP
Through Mane Janes, my team and I partner with Community Action House to provide free haircuts and chemical services, not once a year at a holiday event. Every single month.
On the second Thursday of every month we dedicate time to Community Action House staff and volunteers. Chemical services at 9:00 AM or noon. Haircuts on the hour. Because the people holding everyone else up deserve someone holding them up too.
And on the last Thursday of every month we open our doors from 1:00 to 7:00 PM for Community Action House Food Club members. Walk-in only. No appointments, no paperwork, no barriers. Timed with Food Club so members can come in, get a fresh cut, and leave feeling like a different person.
Fifty+ free haircuts. Every single month.
TWO SALONS. ONE VISION.
People ask why I have two salons. The honest answer: because one business couldn’t hold the full scope of what I believe.
QVD is where the engine gets built. It's where thirty+ professionals develop careers that break six figures, and the culture of excellence and generosity gets established.
Mane Janes is where that engine powers something beyond profit. It's where independent stylists find a home, new graduates learn the real art, and we open the doors once a month and say: come sit down. Let us take care of you. No strings.
When we take care of each other, we don’t just change hair. We change how people see themselves. And when people see themselves differently, they change the world.
WHAT COMMUNITY ACTION HOUSE MEANS TO ME
Community Action House provides food access, housing support, and stability for families in Holland who need a hand—not a handout. Their Food Club model is built on dignity. Their staff and volunteers are the neighbors this community depends on.
When they asked me to speak (not about hair, not about business, but about what self-care actually means when your life doesn’t look like a Pinterest board) I knew something had come full circle.
That’s what this partnership is. That’s what these two salons are for. That’s what I’ve been building—quietly, stubbornly, and with everything I have—for twenty-five years.
